Standard or 'Ride in Peace' varients.
Coffin Lid bellyboards were first used in Cornwall in the early 1900's. Of course, back then they literally were 'Coffin lids' - a few planks of cheap wood held together with some nails.
In a throw-back to yester-year, the Coffin Lid has made a comeback - but in this case, built in a different way. For a start, these boards are made from 25mm thick Paulownia wood, which is light-weight and very bouyant. From the top side, it doesn't look much different to the original. However, it is on the underside that the difference is so noticeable.
The convexed centre channel is hand shaped to provide a cavitational effect, which translates into speed. The angled rails provide the surprising manoeuverability.
The beauty in the Coffin Lid is having the retro look, with the performance of a modern day board. They look like they shouldn't work........ but they do. Brilliantly.
Finished in Odie's Oil.
